‘Johnny V’ shortens proposed Wauwatosa apartment tower

After getting pushback from some residents and city leaders who said the original proposal was too tall, plans for a luxury apartment tower in Wauwatosa has been scaled back to 20 stories.

Mo’s Restaurants owner John “Johnny V” Vassallo is leading the development group that is pursuing the project southwest of West Bluemound and North Mayfair roads, at the site of the former Edwardo’s restaurant.

Original plans filed with the city had the building at 25 stories and containing 354 residential units. According to the city’s website, plans have been scaled back by five stories, bringing the unit count down to 340.

It still contains proposed amenities such as Amazon lockers, a weight room, pool, grill area, cabanas, pet area, movie theater, workspace and conference rooms.

Vassallo did not immediately return a request for comment.

The plans have been modified after Vassallo’s original proposal met resistance from various city panels. In late December, Vassallo maintained the proposal was the best use for the site, and moved forward with the demolition of the Edwardo’s building.

The city is seeking public comment on the new proposal ahead of a Community Affairs Committee meeting on Tuesday, when the project will again be considered. Comments are being accepted until noon Friday.
