When the engineering firm where he worked decided to get out of the lockout/tagout business, Jimi Michalscheck saw an opportunity. He made a quick transition out of the company and formed ESC Services, Inc., in March of 2003.
ESC Services specializes in lockout/tagout processes that safeguard workplace employees from hazardous materials or environments according to federal and state safety standards.
Michalscheck has grown the company an average of 50 percent per year since its inception. He said the company is hiring an average of two engineers per month and he plans to continue the company’s current pace of growth.
“One contributing factor for our success is our ability to identify and inspire good people,” Michalscheck said. “We do work all over the world, so when you have good people you have a good stable flow of client satisfaction. Talented employees love what they do and are passionate about working toward making this an even more successful company. We have a really great team.”
Michalscheck runs ESC Services like a family, not a hierarchy. The company holds monthly meetings where employees can publically voice flaws or share ideas where they think the company can improve. The company openly encourages people to vet anything that isn’t right and even confront the CEO if they feel he made a bad call.
Additionally, the company benefits from doing yearly team charity events.
“I think any company that employs services has an opportunity to benefit from team activity,” he said. “It started with us going down and helping with the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts back in 2007. It was a great way for our team to sync up and help the community. The experience bonded our company together in ways other team building activities just couldn’t. It was great.”
Since that first session, Michalscheck and his team have organized activities at local schools and other organizations.
