In a 2011 study, 64 percent of business decision makers cited cost as the number one hurdle to installing smart building technology in their facilities, according to a survey conducted by the International Data Corp.
Glendale-based Johnson Controls Inc. sought to change that.
Last fall, the global diversified technology and industrial company released Panoptix, an app-based building efficiency software program that helps building owners and operators decrease energy use and operational costs, and reduce greenhouse gases.
“While there is a growing urgency in making buildings more energy efficient, building owners continue to tell us that cost and skill-set gaps are the key barriers to taking significant action,” said Dave Meyers, president of building efficiency at Johnson Controls. “Panoptix addresses these barriers through the combination of new technology and proven expertise of Johnson Controls.”
Panoptix combines four key components: an open technology platform that makes it easy to collect and manage data, a suite of cloud-hosted applications that work with existing building systems, online and phone support, as well as on-site building and energy services and an online community for clients to share best practices, news and resources.
The applications can track energy use, detect abnormal energy consumption, identify equipment faults, diagnose problems and report overall performance on an easy-to-use interface. It can be accessed from any computer or mobile device, at anytime.
“Johnson Controls is known for innovations that improve energy efficiency, sustainability and asset performance,” Myers said. “What’s exciting about Panoptix is how we can now deliver these outcomes.”
