Swedish retailer Ikea today announced its plans to build its first Wisconsin store in Oak Creek.
The popular furniture retailer sent out a media release late Wednesday night saying it would provide details, including the exact location, target opening date and the number of employees this morning. See BizTimes’ follow-up report for more details.
Ikea will be located on about 30 acres of land owned by Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co., on the northwest quadrant of West Drexel Avenue and I-94.
BizTimes on Monday was the first to report the store was considering Oak Creek for a new store.
Oak Creek Mayor Steve Scaffidi spent Wednesday hinting that the store was imminent on his Twitter account with tweets including “Everybody knows green and gold are my favorite colors, but gotta say blue and yellow are a close second…” referring to Ikea’s colors.
Ikea currently has 41 stores and sales of $4.6 billion in the United States.
Ikea stores are between 250,000 to 350,000 square feet. The store in West Chester, Ohio is 344,000 square feet. The Schaumburg, Ill., store, which is closest to Milwaukee, is the largest in the U.S. at 450,000 square feet.
