Located inside the Clarion Hotel on Howell Avenue on the south side of Milwaukee, Sweeney’s Gym is dedicated to making fitness fun and to getting its customers the results they desire.
A hotel is an unusual location for a health club, and its owner, Mike Sweeney turned down the location three times, before finally deciding to open there.
Prior to that, Sweeney operated a gym in his garage and provided personal training to clients.
Sweeney’s Gym at the Clarion Hotel opened in 2006 and has continued to grow since then. Sweeney said one of his biggest challenges has been to convince people that his health club is available to the general public and not just a gym for hotel guests. The gym has about 3,000 square feet of space with exercise equipment, including cable machines, free weights, cardio equipment, yoga mats and stability balls.
“We went ahead and decided that a gym in a hotel didn’t have to be a cubicle,” Sweeney said. “We wanted to give travelers the opportunity to work out in a five-star gym. We have all the same equipment as the big gyms, except no duplicates.”
Sweeney’s Gym also offers private showers, towels and access to the hotel swimming pool.
Guests at the Clarion Hotel are able to use Sweeney’s Gym facilities for free, but the gym is also open to the public and offers memberships and day and weekly passes to those who are not guests.
“We have capped our membership at 2,000,” Sweeney said. “This allows us to keep the focus on the members and personal training. We check in everyone by first and last name, we try to take our customer service skills to the next level.”
Sweeney’s Gym has four full-time employees, two of whom are certified personal trainers. The gym offers one-on-one personal training, customized workout programs for members, a variety of membership packages and online meal planning.
The company offers a variety of membership packages to suit the needs of its customers. Corporate members can enjoy the benefits of the gym for $29.99 per month.
The corporate wellness program at Sweeney’s gym includes the online meal program with personal trainer support, and a 30-day weight-loss challenge is currently under development.
“Right now, we have the 30-day weight-loss team challenge for the general public, where you work out with a trainer three days a week, and get education and support from your team. Our plan is to launch a similar program directed internally at companies. We want to take that traditional corporate discount one step further,” he said.
His corporate clients include Robert W. Baird & Co Inc. in Milwaukee, Midwest Airlines in Oak Creek, Aurora Healthcare in Milwaukee and Proteus Packaging of Franklin.
