Glance at yesteryear: Blatz Hotel

This photo, taken circa 1934, shows the Blatz Hotel on City Hall Square at the corner of North Water and East Wells Streets in downtown Milwaukee. Running by it is the original streetcar. In the foreground is a fountain topped by a statue of American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals founder Henry Bergh and a horse and buggy labeled “Bowles Lunch Co.” The building has since been replaced, the statue now stands in front of the Wisconsin Humane Society, and a new downtown streetcar system was recently constructed.
