Gearbox Express, a wind energy start-up, has opened a 43,000-square-foot facility in Mukwonago. Gearbox hopes to eventually hire 100 employees.
The company will remanufacture the gearboxes that are used in wind turbines when they need aftermarket repairs. The Wisconsin State Energy Program has provided the company with a $3.4 million revolving loan and Gearbox has also solicited investment capital.
“There are more than 26,000 active turbines in the United States and it’s a fact that the gearboxes will need replacing during their lifetime,” said Bruce Neumiller, CEO of Gearbox Express. “The wind farm owners want their investments to keep running so there’s a tremendous opportunity for us to help protect and manage their assets.”
Gearbox focuses on quick turnaround to get turbines back online as quickly as possible. The company remanufactures gearboxes to the latest revision level and conducts load tests on a regenerative test stand.
