Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin will build a three-story, 37,000-square-foot community health center connected to the new Milwaukee Bucks training facility that is under construction in downtown Milwaukee, the organizations announced Friday.
The community health center facility will be called the McKinley Health Center.
In addition, the Bucks’ 55,000-square-foot training facility will be sponsored by Froedtert & MCW, and serve as a sports science research facility for Froedtert & MCW physicians and researchers. The new training facility, which is being built on a plot of land west of North 6th Street and north of West Juneau Avenue will be called Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Sports Science Center.
The health center and the Bucks training facility will be located near the new arena under construction for the Bucks.

Bucks president Peter Feigin said Froedtert & MCW’s involvement in the Sports Science Center will allow the Bucks medical team to collaborate with Froedtert & MCW doctors on training and rehabilitation programs for Bucks players. He also said the facility is intended to become a “hub” for athletic performance research projects, as well as a destination for athletic camps, coaching training and sports education programs for the surrounding community.
The McKinley Health Center, which will be built at North 6th Street and West McKinley Avenue, will be a medical office building that will offer a variety of services including primary care, orthopedic care, sports medicine, physical therapy, and rehabilitation.
The announcements were made in a tent overlooking the construction site of the new training facility, where construction workers and cranes engaged in a flurry of activity in the once vacant Park East corridor.
“As promised when we announced our partnership a month ago, we are deeply committed to making a significant, sustainable difference in Milwaukee,” said Froedtert Health president and chief executive officer Cathy Jacobson. “We are proud to bring a new health center to people who live in this area and are honored to offer Froedtert & MCW’s deep expertise in medical care and research to both the community and the Bucks. This is an extraordinary project with tremendous potential to move our city forward.”
The Bucks and Froedtert & MCW announced their partnership in late July while unveiling a joint workforce development program to help train more than 300 students and adults in the Silver Spring neighborhood on Milwaukee’s northwest side for jobs in the health care industry.
Feigin said the Bucks’ partnership with Froedtert & MCW to build an athletic research and training facility will not affect the team’s partnership with Marquette University on its planned $120 million Athletic Performance Research Center to be built on a 12-acre plot of land along West Michigan Street. He said the Bucks have pledged money toward that project, however he would not reveal the dollar amount.
“We haven’t disclosed what we’ve pledged, but we’re deeply engaged on a capital basis, human capital, and on the research side (as well),” Feigin said.
Aurora Health Care committed $40 million toward the project in January.
“Marquette’s (project is) really geared toward performance and enhancing athletic performance,” Feigin said. “And if you’re going to separate them, Froedtert is really about treatment and wellness and health care.”
