“Once again ranking as Milwaukee’s best hospital and one of the top two in Wisconsin makes a strong statement about our academic medical center’s deep commitment to quality care and service excellence,” said Cathy Buck, president of Froedtert Hospital. “I congratulate and thank our MCW physician partners, nurses and the entire Froedtert Hospital staff for the dedication and expertise that brings this recognition to our organization.”

The best hospital in the state, according to the rankings, is University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison.

St. Luke’s was ranked No. 3. Last year, St. Luke’s was ranked No. 1 in the Milwaukee area and No. 2 in the state.

U.S. News & World Report has published national hospital rankings each year for nearly three decades. Nearly 5,000 hospitals were evaluated for the rankings and 153 performed well enough to rank nationally in at least one of 25 specialties.

Froedtert & MCW is nationally ranked in four specialty areas. The hospital is No. 42 in pulmonology, No. 45 in nephrology, No. 48 in ear, nose and throat medicine and No. 49 in urology.

St. Luke’s has three nationally-ranked specialties. It is No. 31 in cardiology and heart surgery, No. 37 in geriatrics and No. 45 in gastroenterology and GI surgery. Last year, St. Luke’s was ranked No. 47 in cardiology and heart surgery.

“We are pleased that Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center performed well in state and local rankings for U.S. News & World Report, and are especially proud of moving up 16 spaces in the top 50 hospitals nationally for cardiology and heart surgery, while also scoring higher in geriatrics,” said Patrick Falvey, chief transformation officer of Aurora Health Care. “Each year, national rankings provide us with an opportunity for us to gauge our performance, celebrate success and find new ways to enhance the services we provide.”

The three top-ranked hospitals in the nation overall were the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota; Cleveland Clinic; and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
