Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin is planning to expand the health system's Drexel Town Square Health Center in Oak Creek. Plans call for six exam rooms, an ED treatment room, a decontamination room, eight inpatient rooms, a warming kitchen and support spaces, according to documents filed with the city. The health system plans to add 13,700 square feet to the health center, located at 7901 S. Sixth Street, which would bring the building's total size to 121,800 square feet. The expansion represents a change of plans for the health system. In 2018, Froedtert & MCW initially announced it would build a freestanding 18,000-square-foot small-scale hospital at the northwest corner of South 13th Street and West Drexel Avenue, which is about a half-mile west of the Drexel Town Square Health Center. The health system later decided to co-locate the hospital within the existing health center. Froedtert & MCW opened the three-story, 109,000-square-foot Drexel Town Square Health Center in January 2018 to meet a need among patients who previously traveled from Oak Creek, South Milwaukee, Caledonia and Racine to the network’s flagship campus in Wauwatosa. The center currently provides primary care and urgent care services, an outpatient surgery center and a cancer center. The expansion in Oak Creek is one of several capital projects planned by the health system, including new small-scale hospitals in Mequon and Pewaukee. Froedtert & MCW's plan for the Drexel Town Square Health Center is similar to a project underway at its Moorland Reserve Health Center in New Berlin, where it plans to reconfigure about 16,900 square feet to accommodate nine inpatient beds.
