Former U.S. Attorney Krueger joining Foley & Lardner

Matthew Krueger

Former U.S. Attorney Matthew Krueger has joined Foley & Lardner LLP’s Government Enforcement Defense & Investigation Practice Group, the Milwaukee-based law firm announced Monday.

Krueger, who was the chief law enforcement officer for the Eastern District of Wisconsin from 2018 until announcing his resignation in February, will join the firm as a partner in its Milwaukee and Washington D.C. offices.

As U.S. Attorney, Krueger supervised all criminal and civil litigation involving the United States in the 28-county district covering eastern Wisconsin. Krueger was nominated by former president Donald Trump, confirmed by the Senate and sworn into office in February 2018.

During Krueger’s tenure, his office prosecuted high-profile cases involving national security, cybercrime, public corruption, health care fraud, financial crime and PPP fraud, Foley said in its announcement.

“When looking to return to private practice, I sought a firm that would allow me to develop a national practice while also serving Wisconsin,” said Krueger. “Foley is an ideal fit, with its national platform, top-tier health care and cyber practices, and highly respected, experienced litigators in Milwaukee. I couldn’t be more excited to join the team.”

Krueger previously worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the state’s Eastern District in both the criminal and civil divisions. Prior to that he was a litigation and appellate associate at Sidley Austin LLP in Washington, D.C.

“Matt’s government background and his significant civil and criminal trial experience is a perfect complement to our litigation practice in Milwaukee,” said Linda Benfield, managing partner of Foley’s Milwaukee office. “We continue to focus on expanding our capabilities with the addition of top lateral talent. Matt immediately deepens our bench strength and the services we provide to our clients both in Wisconsin and nationally.”
