First Stage to offer classes and performances for students with autism

First Stage Theater Academy, based in Milwaukee, has broadened its programming initiatives to accommodate students with autism through both classes and sensory-friendly performances.

The special performances will add to the theater academy’s Next Steps program, which encompasses classes geared toward students with autism. Next Steps classes debuted in August.
First Stage will offer performances of “Five Little Monkeys” and “Mole Hill Stories” tailored toward the needs and comfort of children with autism and their families. During these special performances, First Stage will limit the number of audience members and lower the performance volume.
A sensory-friendly performance of “Five Little Monkeys” is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 11, at 4 p.m. at the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center, 325 W. Walnut Street in Milwaukee. Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased through the First Stage box office at 414-267-2961.
“We’re delighted that children with autism and their families can enjoy these interactive performances,” said Jennifer Adams, Next Steps program director.
