FINANCIAL & INSURANCE SERVIES: Northwestern Mutual tower reshapes Milwaukee skyline

The Milwaukee skyline will take on a whole new look during the next few years as Northwestern Mutual constructs its new 32-story downtown tower.

The $130 million Northwestern Mutual Tower and Commons will accommodate the company as it continues to grow, said Sandy Botcher. The new building replaces the East Tower, which was located on the same site.

“As a growing company with financial stability, we decided to invest in our future and in downtown and build a new facility,” Botcher said.

The building, which will be complete by 2017, complements Northwestern Mutual’s other offices in the Milwaukee area, including a large complex in Franklin.

“We are from Milwaukee and we wanted to maintain a strong downtown presence. Also, younger workers are interested in working in an urban environment and we think this modern facility will be an asset with recruiting workers,” Botcher said.
The Northwestern Mutual Tower and Commons will include collaboration spaces where staff can work together on projects; enhanced training facilities; enhanced healthcare and fitness centers; an updated café and other spaces that will be open to the public during regular business hours.

“Northwestern Mutual is excited about the value this project will bring the city of Milwaukee in regards to jobs,” Botcher said. The construction of the new facility is expected to create 1,000 construction jobs through 2017; the company anticipates additional job creation in businesses surrounding the tower, such as restaurants.
