College Possible Milwaukee will help 375 area students from low-income families boost their ACT scores and open up their college options with support of a $300,000 grant from Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation.
College Possible, a nonprofit organization dedicated to giving high school and college students the mentoring and resources they need to succeed in higher education, was among 34 recipients in Wisconsin and Minnesota to receive a Great Lakes “College Ready” grant from a pot of more than $4 million.
“Offering juniors preparation for the ACT is a main component of our program,” said Edie Turnbull, executive director of College Possible Milwaukee. “In the grant proposal, we specified that our goal is to help increase students’ scores by a minimum of two points. That can make a significant difference in how many schools accept them.”
Great Lakes, based in Madison, awarded funding to College Possible for producing noteworthy academic results among student participants. According to College Possible, the organization has traditionally helped junior-year high school participants raise their ACT scores by 19 percent, and 95 percent of high school senior participants were accepted to college in the 2012-13 school year.
The Great Lakes’ “College Ready” grants assist students facing significant barriers to education, including low-income students, minority students, and first-generation college students. The grant enhances Great Lakes’ mission to support underprivileged youth in achieving their higher education goals.
