Chr Hansen to expand West Allis headquarters

Manufacturer planning to demolish 11 vacant buildings

Global bioscience company Chr Hansen is planning to demolish nine vacant apartment buildings to expand its current US headquarters in West Allis.

Chr Hansen operates its existing headquarters at 9105 W. Maple St. The company purchased two of the properties located on the south side intersection of West Lapham and South 91 streets and nine properties between West Maple and West Mitchell streets, west of South 89th Street from T&G Properties LLC.

The 11 properties had previously been the site of nine residential apartment buildings. All of the tenants moved out of the buildings as of mid-September, according to city documents. Demolition is slated to begin by mid-November.

Chr Hansen is not proposing any immediate construction of any new building or structures on the West Allis property, according to documents submitted to the city.

“A demolition of the residential apartment buildings is a first step to facilitate Chr Hansen’s expansion of its U.S. headquarters,” documents stated.

The West Allis plan commission will review the proposal on Wednesday.

Chr Hansen develops natural solutions for the food, nutritional, pharmaceutical and agricultural industries. It was founded in 1874 and has more than 3,000 employees across 30 countries with a global headquarters in Hørsholm, Denmark.

The company has been expanding its Wisconsin presence.

In April, Chr. Hansen purchased Banker Wire’s Mukwonago manufacturing facility with plans to convert it into the North American headquarters for its natural colors division, moving work there from its West Allis facility.
