West Allis-based Chr. Hansen Inc. has acquired Overland Park, Kan.-based Nutritional Physiology Co. for $185 million. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter.
Chr. Hansen Inc. parent company Chr. Hansen Holding A/S is based in Denmark. The global bioscience company develops natural solutions for the food, nutritional, pharmaceutical and agricultural industries. The company has 300 U.S. employees, 260 of whom are at its West Allis and New Berlin facilities. Chr. Hansen already makes microbials for poultry, cattle and swine, as well as silage innoculants.
NPC makes probiotic products used to improve gut health, maximize energy capture and aid the natural immune system in livestock and poultry. It has 52 employees, the majority of whom work in technical sales and research and will be retained in the integration, said David Carpenter, group vice president and president of Chr. Hansen Inc. Americas. The work from NPC’s Kansas facility will be transferred to Wisconsin.
“Our overall strategy and ambition is to expand our activities within the microbial solution area,” Carpenter said. “Animal health is an area that we want to create a broader business in probiotics for livestock and animals. This is a good fit to our existing business we have in animal nutrition.”
