The 16 Inch Society, a group of former Chicago-natives now living in Milwaukee that regularly get together for an annual 16-inch softball game, will take the field on Sunday June 10 starting at 1 p.m. in LaFollette Park.
The event will raise money for the Miracle League of Milwaukee, an organization dedicated to allowing all children the chance to play baseball. The Miracle League of Milwaukee in partnership with other local organizations is dedicated to providing children with special needs the opportunity and equipment to play baseball. The funds will be used to fund the organization’s baseball field in Milwaukee.
“This is the 11th annual 16 Inch Society Softball game,” said Patrick Murphy, “We have some new members this year, and we’re looking forward to starting the second decade of this incredible tradition.”
According to Murphy, 16-inch softball is a form of slow pitch softball popularized and played for years on playgrounds and parks throughout Chicago.
Over the last ten years, the group has raised more than $86,000 for Milwaukee area charities.
“Anyone who donates $100 or more during the event gets to be a voting member for the following year,” Murphy said. “Voting members play an integral role in nominating and selecting the charity the next year’s funds will go to.”
Organization’s nominated and selected to receive the funds have to have a connection with Chicago or a connection with members in the organization. The Miracle League of Milwaukee is supported by two members of the 16 Inch Society who have children with special needs.
Approximately 100 people contribute to the society on a regular basis, Murphy said. “Approximately 50 to 75 people usually show up to the game.”
Martino’s will provide free hotdogs for the event and T-shirts for those who participate will be provided by Regis Marketing.
The Game will begin at 1 p.m. at LaFollette Park 92nd & Washington St. in Milwaukee.
