Women’s clothing retailer Charlotte Russe announced earlier this week it will close stores at Bayshore Town Center in Glendale and at Brookfield Square after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Sunday.
The stores are on a list of 94 locations throughout the country that the San Diego-based company will liquidate and close during the next two months, according to court filings. Store closing sales will begin by Feb. 7.
Charlotte Russe stores remain open at Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa, Southridge Mall in Greendale and Regency Mall in Racine.
The loss of Charlotte Russe is just the latest to a growing list of recent closures at Bayshore. After suffering numerous retail and restaurant losses, which most recently include American Eagle, Shaw’s Jewelers, Hom Wood Fired Grill and Sprecher Restaurant & Pub, the mall now has 54 available spaces, according to the website for its owner, Dallas-based Cypress Equities Managed Services L.P.
Bayshore’s current tenant list totals over 80 retailers and food and beverage concepts.
Late last year, Cypress Equities proposed a $75 million redevelopment project for Bayshore that would significantly reduce the retail space at the mall.
The plan includes demolishing the northern indoor mall portion, which has multiple vacancies including the soon-to-be former Charlotte Russe space.
Cypress has requested that the city put a hold on the project’s approval process so that it can continue to review the plans, said city administrator Rachel Safstrom.Â
Meanwhile, Brookfield Square is attracting new development, bringing in additional concepts besides just traditional mall retail space.
Construction is now underway on the two-story, 45,000-square-foot structure that will house Chicago-based restaurant and entertainment center WhirlyBall, which will open this summer. A Marcus Theatres Bistroplex cinema and WhirlyBall will be built at the south end of the mall, taking the place of a Sears store that closed in early 2018.
Outback Steakhouse and an Uncle Julio’s Mexican Restaurant will also be developed on nearby pad sites.
Ongoing construction at Brookfield Square is part of a larger redevelopment effort being led by the mall’s owner, Chattanooga, Tennessee-based CBL & Associates Properties.
The City of Brookfield is partnering with a developer to build a $32 million, 54,000-square-foot conference center and a 168-room Hilton Garden Inn hotel linked by a glass walkway in the former Sears Auto Center parking lot at Brookfield Square.
