Cafe Centraal in Bay View will close its doors in January as it undergoes renovation, Milwaukee-based Lowlands Group announced Thursday.

The restaurant, which first opened in 2008 at 2306 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., will close following its Jan. 1 service until early February. The project will include an expanded kitchen with new food and beverage coolers, a refinished floor, a redesigned bar with more draught lines and an overall facelift throughout the restaurant’s interior, according to the announcement.

“When we first opened Centraal 10 years ago, Bay View was a very different neighborhood and we opened on a shoestring budget,” Dan Herwig, director of brand and marketing at Lowlands Group said in a statement “This renovation is all about setting Centraal up for its next ten-year run in Bay View.”

Lowlands Group recently gave facelifts to both Café Hollander in Wauwatosa and on the East Side, and to Café Benelux in the Third Ward, but those projects weren’t as extensive as the renovations planned for Centraal, according to the announcement.

Updates to Centraal’s food and beverage menus are also in the works, but details have not yet been announced.

“After 10 years of heavy use of the space, we’re looking forward to freshening it up and adding some of the details we wish we could have done when we first opened,” said Herwig.
