Editor’s note: Green Bay Mayor James Schmitt wrote a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell about the potential economic impact of the league’s lockout of its referees on the city of Green Bay. Dear Commissioner Goodell:
As the Mayor of the City of Green Bay and a shareholder and “owner” of the Green Bay Packers, I am writing to express my disappointment and displeasure with the officiating at the end of the game last night in Seattle. However, more importantly, as an elected official and public steward, I’m concerned about the impact on the integrity of the game and the significant financial effect that it may have upon our community.
The National Football League has become the pinnacle of all professional sports by requiring an elite product from the best of the best, its coaches, players and organizations. It is disheartening to see that elite representation threatened by less than qualified officials who are not quite at the same level as the rest of the League’s representatives. I feel the League’s integrity is currently at risk because of this gap in performance.
One of the greatest things about the NFL is how a small community team like the Green Bay Packers can exist and succeed in the NFL despite large market teams. The Packers are in a position to succeed, in part, because of this community and the historical integrity of the League. Unfortunately, last night’s game creates a negative perception on the NFL brand, which in turn jeopardizes the Packers chance for success as well as the potential to negatively affect our local economy.
I believe it is crucial to resolve this dispute as soon as possible to prevent any further deterioration in the National Football League’s product. I urge you to do what you can to bring an end to this conflict between the referees and owners.
