Miller Brewing Co.
Miller Brewing Co., Milwaukee, donated $20,000 to support scholarships for students in the Cooperative Urban Teacher Education Program (CUTEP) at the Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC). The funds will be used to pay for field replacement internships. The program educates K-12 teachers with an emphasis on urban settings. Students complete their first two years at MATC and are then eligible to enter the schools of education at Alverno College, Carroll College, Marquette University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, UW-Milwaukee, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater. Currently there are 386 CUTEP students and 30 are expected to graduate in the spring.
Wisconsin Association Management
Christopher Ruditys, owner of Wisconsin Association Management (WAM), Milwaukee, purchased Robbins & Lloyd Career Training Institute, 5309 North 118th Ct., Milwaukee. The acquisition will allow WAM to become the only association management company in Wisconsin to provide an in-house educational facility. WAM clients will have immediate access to an educational facility and conference center for seminars and workshops. Robbins & Lloyd Career Training Institute offers seating for 85 students and parking for 100 cars. Plans for the school include purchasing a new facility to expand and upgrade seating capacity.
Milwaukee Wave
The Milwaukee Wave soccer team opened two satellite ticket sales offices at local youth soccer facilities to build stronger relationships with youth soccer organizations. The sales offices at Uihlein Soccer Park and Brookfield Indoor Soccer Complex will offer Wave merchandise, tickets and prizes. Uihlein Soccer Park has partnered with the Milwaukee Wave in a fundraising effort to send two youth teams to an international competition in Italy in June. Four dollars from each ticket purchased at Uihlein Soccer Park for the March 6 Wave home game versus the Philadelphia KiXX will go toward sending the youth teams on the trip.

Gail Sideman, owner and publicist for Publicity Power Group, Milwaukee, has changed the company name to Publiside Personal Publicity. Governor’s Award for Outstanding Design and Construction Services
Gov. Jim Doyle presented five Wisconsin firms and one individual with the 2004 Governor’s Award for Outstanding Design and Construction Services for state building projects. Berners-Schober Inc., Green Bay, received the Excellence in Sustainable Design and Construction for the Department of Natural Resources Northeast Region headquarters, Howard. KEE Architecture, Madison, received the Excellence in Architectural Design Award for the Pioneer Student and Technology Center on the UW-Platteville campus. Arnold & O’Sheridan Inc., Brookfield, received the Excellence in Engineering Design Award for the Waukesha State Office Building addition and remodeling project. Miron Construction Company Inc., Neenah, received the Excellence in Construction Award for the Southeast Regional Facility (SERF) at UW-Madison. J.H. Findorff & Son Inc., Madison, received the Excellence in Construction Award for the Health Sciences Learning Center on the UW-Madison campus. Jerry Walters, an engineering specialist at UW-Stevens Point, received the Excellence in Service Award for his administration and management of construction projects on the Stevens Point campus.
Department of Commerce Early Planning Grant and Business Employees Skills Training Programs
Ten Wisconsin businesses received a total of $42,250 in funding from the Department of Commerce Early Planning Grant (EPG) and Business Employees Skills Training (BEST) programs. EPGs assist Wisconsin entrepreneurs and small businesses in obtaining the professional services necessary to evaluate the feasibility of a proposed start-up or expansion project. The BEST program assists businesses in training employees. Eight businesses received $3,000 EPGs: Seven Stones Center for Wellness Ltd., Milwaukee; Tom L. Burse, Milwaukee; I/O Technologies Inc., Milwaukee; Chrysalis Packaging & Assembly Inc., Milwaukee; Robert Kujawa Jr., Franklin; Compassionate Mothers LLC, Milwaukee; John A. Schlick, Menomonee Falls and Syslogic Inc., Brookfield. Halifax Institute Inc., Milwaukee, received a $10,000 EPG. New Age Chemical Inc., Delafield, received an $8,250 BEST grant.

Milwaukee Area Real Estate Investors
The Milwaukee Area Real Estate Investors (MAREI) has associated itself with the National Real Estate Investors Association (NationalREIA). NationalREIA provides support in forming local organizations of real estate investors. MAREI recently received an award of excellence for membership development from the NationalREIA for growing from four people at their first meeting in March of 2002 to more than 100 people currently attending monthly meetings.

Robert Meldman, an attorney and partner at Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren, S.C., Milwaukee, has become an executive in residence at UW-Milwaukee. The law firm is donating Meldman’s hours in-kind as a matching grant from the IRS for the university’s Low Income Taxpayers Clinic (LITC). The UWM LITC provides free tax counseling to individuals who otherwise could not afford assistance and who have received notice from the IRS regarding earned income credit claims, dependency deductions, filing status and resident alien and nonresident alien tax issues.
Washington County Small Business Owners Association
The Washington County Small Business Owners Association was recently formed to provide support, professional development, educational opportunities and networking opportunities to existing small business owners. The association is a cooperative effort between Blue Iris Graphics, Moraine Park Technical College, UW-Washington County and the West Bend Chamber of Commerce.
Brevient Technologies Inc.
The Medical College of Wisconsin has selected Brevient Technologies Inc., Milwaukee, to build and implement a new student information system for the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Brevient will replace the graduate school’s existing system with the Brevient Cohesion Web-based software solution. Features in the new graduate student information system will include workflow management, automated communication plans for students and prospective students, faculty access to student grade management, admissions information and internal to external reporting. Students will also have access to their own records and the ability to manage their information from virtually any location.
Women’s Fund of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation
The Women’s Fund of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation committed $189,250 in grants and scholarships to the Milwaukee community in 2004 and 2005. The Women’s Fund regular grants totaled $163,000 and were given to 21 agencies that work to improve the lives of women and girls. The African American Women’s Project Fund gave $3,250 to three agencies and the Her Scholarship Fund of the Women’s Fund gave four scholarships for a total of $10,000. The Women’s Fund also gave $5,000 to Wisconsin Women=Prosperity; $5,000 for support of the Status of Women in Wisconsin update and $3,000 to fund a workshop for young women coordinated by the Girls in Charge Coalition.

Meyer & Wallis, Milwaukee, promoted Bob Meyer to chief executive officer and president; Bob Bourgeois to senior vice president and chief operating officer and hired Murray Friedman as vice president and director of account management. Bourgeois re-joined Meyer & Wallis in 2000 after serving in management roles at McCann-Erickson USA and Cramer-Krasselt. Bourgeois most recently served as vice president and director of account management for Meyer & Wallis. Friedman has 20 years of experience in marketing, specifically in the banking and health care industries. Friedman most recently served as vice president and director of marketing at North Shore Bank.
National Association of Women Business Owners Wisconsin Inc.
The National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Wisconsin Inc. is accepting nominations for its 2005 Wisconsin Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The award honors a woman business owner who has achieved business success through entrepreneurial spirit. The nominations will be judged by a panel of judges representing government, academia, business and business ownership throughout the state. The winner will be announced at the Women Triumphant event in April. Nominations can be found at www.nawbowisconsin.org and are due by March 19.
Milwaukee Area Technical College
Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) received a $197,000 federal grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration to expand nursing programs at its Oak Creek campus. The grant will pay for the construction of a new nursing lab that will be able to accommodate 48 new students per semester. The expansion follows the earlier addition of nursing classes to the MATC Mequon and West Allis campuses. The expansion is part of the college’s plan to create regional nursing programs. The first nursing offering at Oak Creek will be a five-credit course leading to a certified nursing assistant (CNA) certificate. In subsequent semesters, practical nursing and registered nursing courses will be available. MATC also announced the addition of a FORWARD Management training program to its West Allis and Oak Creek campuses. The accelerated series of evening or Saturday courses for working adults leads to an associate degree in workplace supervision. New groups will begin in the spring 2005 semester on Saturday mornings at the West Allis campus and on Wednesday evenings at the Oak Creek campus.
Neurognostics Inc.
Neurognostics Inc., Milwaukee, recently introduced MindState, a functional data acquisition device (fDAD), to the health care market. MindState is a fDAD application that enables health care professionals to acquire functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data that may be used to track disease progression in patients with disorders of the central nervous system. MindState can also be used to test drug efficacy. MindState fDAD works in conjunction with 1.5 or 3 Tesla MRI scanners and works by presenting patients with cognitive or motor stimuli and collecting time-synchronized patient responses and MR images. Neurognostics recently received approval from the Food and Drug Administration to market MindState.
