The Kimpton Hotel will open in 2016

A Chicago developer is planning to build a 110-150 room hotel on the block northwest of Plankinton Avenue and Clybourn Street in downtown Milwaukee.

Clark Street Real Estate acquired a three-acre site adjacent to The Shops at Grand Avenue in 2008. The site has been operated as a parking lot by ABM Parking Services. According to Clark Street Real Estate’s website, the company has been planning a dense mixed-use development with uses such as retail, office and hospitality.

Clark Street is planning a hotel on the site and partnering with Choice Hotels International, Inc., according to numerous commercial real estate sources familiar with the project. Choice Hotels owns several mid-scale hotel brands including Cambria Hotels & Suites, Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, Sleep Inn, Quality Inn and Clarion.

The hotel would be the latest in a string of new hotels opening up in downtown Milwaukee in the last three years.

The 126-year-old Loyalty Building, 611 N. Broadway, became the home of the 127-room Hilton Garden Inn in 2012. The following year, the 205-room Marriott Downtown Hotel at 323 E. Wisconsin Ave. and the 90-room Brewhouse Inn & Suites at the former Pabst brewery complex opened.

Potawatomi Hotel & Casino opened a 19-story, 381-room hotel in 2014, just west of downtown.

The 158-room Kimpton Hotel at the northeast corner of Broadway and Chicago Street in the Third Ward and the 155-suite SpringHill Suites at the corner of 4th and Wells streets, are both scheduled to open in mid-2016.

A 200-room Westin Hotel is proposed just west of the new 17-story 833 East office building at 833 E. Michigan St.
