Milwaukee Public Museum will open a special exhibit, “Tyrannosaurs – Meet the Family,” this Friday.
The exhibition will feature five complete tyrannosaur cast skeletons, seven tyrannosaur cast skulls, three life-sized models of feathered dinosaurs, an immersive video projection tunnel, hands-on activities and a dinosaur-themed gift shop.
Created by the Australian Museum and toured internationally by Minnesota-based Flying Fish Exhibits, the exhibit explores the latest discoveries about the tyrannosaurs’ family tree, according to an announcement from MPM.
“Tyrannosaurs – Meet the Family is unlike any other exhibit we’ve had at the museum,” said Ellen Censky, president and chief executive officer at MPM. “It showcases the important discoveries scientists have made over the past couple decades about why tyrannosaurs evolved the way they did during different time periods on Earth, while using impressive and interactive displays as well as technology to keep visitors engaged from beginning to end.”
The exhibit explores the key features that define a tyrannosaur and makes them different from other dinosaur groups; the diversity within the tyrannosaurs family; what makes T. rex one of the most formidable predators that ever lived; and the legacy of tyrannosaurs.
The exhibit is open during regular museum hours: Wednesday through Monday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
MPM is offering special programming in conjunction with the exhibit:
- Science on Tap lecture series, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m.: “The Evolution of Dinosaurian Flight” with Dr. Jingmai O’Connor of the Field Museum.
- Dome Theater and Planetarium programs, Feb. 18-June 2: “DinoSOARS!” and “Dinosaurs of Antarctica.”
The Karen J. Glanert Charitable Trust provided support for the exhibit, and “DinoSOARS!” was supported by the Alvin & Marion Birnschein Foundation, Schoenleber Foundation, Inc. and Elizabeth Elser Doolittle Charitable Trusts.
