Milwaukee remains the highest-paying metro area in the United States for physicians, according to an annual report from
Doximity.
Milwaukee’s average physician compensation in 2020 is $430,274, the highest among the 50 largest metro areas,
the 2020 U.S. Physician Employment Report found.
Milwaukee’s average increased from $395,363 in 2019, which was also the highest among metros that year.
According to the report, the top 10 cities with the highest average compensation this year are:
- Milwaukee: $430,274
- Atlanta: $428,244
- Jacksonville, Florida: $427,090
- Buffalo, New York: $407,070
- Orlando: $406,587
- Raleigh, North Carolina: $406,365
- Charlotte, North Carolina: $404,285
- Minneapolis: $401,978
- Riverside, California: $397,005
- Dallas: $396,184.
Milwaukee also has the highest average compensation in the country for female physicians, at $363,717, according to the report. That's also up from an average of $351,247 last year. Nationally, female physicians had an average annual salary of $299,036 this year.
The metros where female physicians were paid the highest average salary include:
- Milwaukee: $363,717
- Minneapolis: $354,160
- Jacksonville, Florida: $350,418
- Birmingham: $334,327
- Cincinnati: $334,208
The average wage gap between male and female physicians was 28% nationally, with male doctors earning more than $116,000 more annually than their female counterparts.
The Doximity report is based on responses from more than 135,000 licensed U.S. doctors.
