Charter school wants to move to former Astronautics headquarters

Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy plans $4.5 million investment in Teutonia Avenue building

Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy, a public charter school known until recently as Milwaukee Collegiate Academy, is seeking to move into the Astronautics Corp. of America’s headquarters building on Milwaukee’s northwest side.

According to an application filed with the city, the high school wants to occupy the 115,000-square-foot commercial office building at 4115 N. Teutonia Ave, a move that would include a planned $4.5 million investment in the property.

Astronautics announced earlier this year that it would move its corporate operations from Milwaukee into the former headquarters of Master Lock in Oak Creek. At the time of the announcement, the company, which designs and builds avionics equipment for the commercial and military aerospace industry, said its headquarters move would be completed this fall.

Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy said it has reached capacity in its current facility at 4030 N. 29th St. with 310 students.

The school was founded in 2003 as a private Christian high school and has operated out of various locations over the years. In 2013, it changed its name to Milwaukee Collegiate Academy and moved to its current location, which is located six blocks from the Astronautics building. The school adopted its current name in May.

In its application, the school noted that it had proposed the 30th Street Corridor as a potential site for constructing a new building, but were advised to pursue other areas.

The Board of Zoning Appeals will consider the school’s special use zoning request on Nov. 7.
