The last international ship that will come through the St. Lawrence Seaway to the Port of Milwaukee this year was scheduled to arrive today.
However, poor visibility and high wind conditions kept the ship, the Federal Hunter, away from the dock in Milwaukee.
“The Federal Hunter has opted to call on Chicago today and will return to Milwaukee after that,” said Jeff Fleming, spokesman for the Port of Milwaukee.
Once it docks at the Port of Milwaukee, th Federal Hunter will unload 3,500 tons of steel products – raw material used by local manufacturers.
Since 1996, Federal Marine Terminals has served as the Port of Milwaukee’s general cargo stevedore, and this year will rank as the seventh highest overseas cargo volume during that tenure.
“The Port of Milwaukee is a city transportation asset that adds efficiency and value to our local economy,” said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. “When local companies operate cost-effectively, they employ more workers, and, in turn, our community is stronger.”
Forty-seven international ships called on the Port of Milwaukee in 2015. The Federal Hunter will be the last ocean vessel of the season to arrive here. It will depart via the St. Lawrence Seaway before that route closes for the season on Dec. 31.
The Port of Milwaukee remains open through the winter as ships carry cargo such as salt, limestone and cement to and from other Great Lakes ports.
