Seda North America plans to build a 125,000-square-foot addition to its facility in Mt. Pleasant. Including the cost of equipment, the expansion cost is estimated at $24.5 million.
Seda, a producer of paper packaging for food products, occupies at 323,000-square-foot building at 12501 Globe Dr. in Mt. Pleasant. The facility was built by Chicago-based HSA Commercial in 2008 and occupied by Seda in 2011.
The company has 126 employees working in the facility currently and plans to increase employment there to 188 by 2021, according to Mt. Pleasant community development director Logan Martin.
Seda has acquired an 18.6-acre site south of its existing facility for the expansion, which will include 25,000 square feet of manufacturing space and 100,000 square feet of warehousing space.
The Mt. Pleasant facility is the company’s North America headquarters. The company considered locations on the East Coast for its expansion, but local officials provided incentives to encourage expansion of its existing facility, Martin said. The village plans to provide a $250,000 grant, from a tax incremental financing district, for the expansion. The village will also continue to provide an annual subsidy of about $250,000 in TIF funds to Seda until 2026, when the TIF district will be closed out.
The Mt. Pleasant Plan Commission will review the project during its Wednesday meeting.
