Zoological Society honors locals for their support
Judy Holz Stathas has received the Emu Egg from the Zoological Society of Milwaukee. The Emu Egg, the society’s top award, recognizes Holz Stathas for nearly 25 years of commitment and service to the organization. She is a member of the board of directors and has chaired many fund-raising events, including Zoo Ball, and served on the Associate Board. She and her husband, Dr. William Stathas, also supported Milwaukee County Zoo exhibits ranging from the Holz Family Impala Country to an education annex in the Animal Health Center. The Antonia Foundation also received the Bubo virginianus honor for exceptional support of ZSM education programs; Lois Tetzlaff was honored with Leontideus rosalia for going above and beyond the call of duty to the ZSM; Michael Grebe, ZSM board member and partner at Quarles & Brady S.C., was honored with Spheniscus humboldti for his individual service; and Canopies, an event rental company owned and operated by Ken and Joan Hudak received Loxodonta africana for their outstanding support of the ZSM.
YMCA Black Achievers Announce Achievers of the Year
YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee will recognize three adult Black Achiever volunteers at the 29th annual Achievers Scholarship and Awards Gala tonight at the Pfister Hotel, in downtown Milwaukee.
Dante A.C. Houston, co-chair for the Career Cluster committee and advocate for professionalism and presenting the best public image, will be honored as the 2010 Adult Black Achiever of the Year. The Adult Black Achiever of the Year Award is the highest honor extended to an adult volunteer. The Award is chosen by volunteer peers and recognizes an individual who best exemplifies the mission of the Black Achievers program. Houston has helped organize presentations and speakers for career development utilizing his expertise as a corporate recruiter to provide realistic opportunities for the students. Clover Barnes, RN at Children’s Hospital and Health System will be honored with the 2010 Champion Achiever of the Year award for contributing the highest number of volunteer hours in the class during the program year. Barnes has contributed 850 hours since her orientation in August 2009. Wayne Tompkins of Rockwell Automation will be honored with the 2010 Alumni Achiever of the Year award for exemplifying the mission of the program through participating and his quality of work, and support of other students.
Through the YMCA Black Achievers program, Adult Achievers volunteer their time to assist youth with career exploration, mentoring and academic advising. Adult Achievers work with teens to equip them with the skills and competencies needed to gain acceptance to and graduation from institutions of higher learning, eventually leading to successful entry into the workforce. The gala is held to raise scholarship funds for teen achievers.
UPAF makes changes to its 2011 campaign staff
The United Performing Arts Fund has kicked off its 2011 fundraising campaign and has completed its staffing changes as well.
Katie Peschel will take on the role of vice president of development, she will be responsible for overseeing daily operations of the campaign. She has been with UPAF through nine campaign cycles. Beth Berdes has accepted the position of special events director, she was previously an event manager with Harley Davidson Corporation. Kristine Baker has been promoted to development director leadership and will continue to oversee leadership donors who contribute $500 to $2,999 which are not participants in employee campaigns. Jeannie Jackson has been promoted to development director community and wil be responsible for overseeing the employee giving campaigns that run in combination with other organizations. Margaret Macek has been promoted to associate operations director and continues to be responsible for the support functions of the organization and campaign. "We are extremely optimistic about this new campaign and these staff changes are going to play a huge part in our success," said Cristy Garcia-Thomas, UPAF president. "Personally, I am looking forward to working with everyone in their new positions."
