Wisconsin superchargers to open soon

Elon Musk’s cross-country Tesla roadtrip will likely take him through Wisconsin, to one of several high-powered Tesla chargers currently being installed throughout the state.

The current plan is to install charging stations in Mauston, Madison, Pleasant Prairie and Eau Claire before year’s end. Another is planned for Onalaska, said Chris Allessi II of Greendale, who runs the Wisconsin Tesla Owners Club.

The previously planned Green Bay supercharger has either been moved or canceled, he said.

The Pleasant Prairie supercharger broke ground last week and work started three or four weeks ago for the supercharger at East Towne Mall in Madison, Allessi said. The ground is marked and ready in Onalaska.

There are just a few people installing all of the Wisconsin superchargers, so they have been working quickly to meet the company’s goal of having a functioning cross-country supercharger network by the end of 2013.

“They are really understaffed as they’re trying to get as many stations as possible open all over the country,” he said. “For the most part, they’re trying to get a coast to coast setup by the end of the year.”

There are now about 40 Tesla owners in Wisconsin, and the Wisconsin Tesla Owners Club has 10 members. Allessi has been helping to facilitate the setup of Wisconsin superchargers.
