BloodCenter of Wisconsin, based in Milwaukee, aims to draw more than 800 donors during its “Season of Giving” Blood Drive on Thursday, Dec. 26, and Friday, Dec. 27.
In its 13th year, the holiday blood drive will include an appearance by Lt. Brian Murphy, a retired officer of the Oak Creek Police Department who was critically injured by gunfire while responding to the Aug. 5, 2012 shooting at Oak Creek’s Sikh Temple of Wisconsin.
“Thanks to the generous donors who took time to give blood, I am here today,” Murphy said. “People call me a hero, but blood donors are the real heroes. They save lives every day. They saved mine.”
The blood drive will run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Dec. 26 and Dec. 27 at the Peck Welcome Center of the Milwaukee County Zoo, located at 10001 W. Blue Mound Rd. in Milwaukee.
All attempting donors will receive complimentary zoo admission for the day, a complimentary adult zoo ticket for a future visit, free parking and free childcare.
BloodCenter is in particular need of O-negative blood donors, but blood donors of all types are encouraged to donate. Individuals age 17 and older who are in good health and meet eligibility requirements can donate. Sixteen-year-old donors can contribute with parental consent. All donors should bring a photo ID that includes their birthdate.
The blood donation process typically takes about an hour.
