GPS opens first Milwaukee education center

GPS Education Partners has opened the program’s first education center in the City of Milwaukee, at Strattec Security Corporation.

“We are very excited to bring this mission of navigating student success to Milwaukee,” said Stephanie Borowski, president of GPS. “Thanks to the partnerships of local businesses, Milwaukee Public Schools and the greater Milwaukee community, we will be able to serve more students with a work-based learning pathway for success.”

Butler-based GPS pairs schools and manufacturing businesses to teach non-traditional high school learners in interactive manufacturing environments. Manufacturers construct education centers for the program at their facilities.

The company hosts classroom learning on site and then applies the lessons with hands-on training.

“Strattec is pleased to be able to support this initiative with our facility classroom, said Kathy Scherbarth, vice president operations, aftermarket and commercial sales at Strattec. “We all benefit when business partners with the education community with the intent of graduating students that are best prepared to enter the manufacturing workplace.”

The MMAC Council of Small Business Executives raised $69,000 in contributions from the business community for the first year costs of the new education center.

“These efforts are a true example of the small business community coming together to support a program that develops skilled workers and stimulates the vitality of the region,” said Mary Steinbrecher, executive director of COSBE.
