Hundreds of fast-food and retail workers here in Wisconsin will walk off their jobs on Thursday as part of strikes in dozens of cities with thousands of workers across the country.
Workers in Madison and Wausau for the first time will join workers in Milwaukee and walk off their jobs.
Strikers here are among those in a national movement of low-wage workers who say they are standing up for higher wages and a better future for their families and communities. Workers are rallying for a wage of $15 per hour and the right to form a union without retaliation or unfair labor practices.
The national strike comes on the heels of strikes on May 15 and Aug. 1.
Hundreds of workers from more than 50 stores are expected to walk off their jobs here on Thursday. The strikes will take place at Burger King, Dollar Tree, Sears, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Jimmy John’s, Wendy’s and more.
Community Organizations involved in Thursday’s strikes include Wisconsin Jobs Now, Citizen Action of Wisconsin, 9to5, League of Young Voters, Voces de la Frontera, MICAH (Milwaukee Inner-city Congregations Allied for Hope), African American Roundtable and Wisconsin State AFL-CIO.
